Mary & Max
Director - Adam Elliot
It’s not often you catch a good claymation on television unless it’s Christmas eve and involves a bald, cheese loving man from Wigan and his mute dog. I caught the beginning of Mary & Max on Film4 this evening and was straight away compelled.
It is a simple tale of pen-friendship between two very different people. Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely eight year old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44 year old, severelt obese, Jewish man with Aspergers Syndrome living in the chaos of New York.
It is not only the factually inspired storyline that is undoubtedly lovable, but the characters too. As the story goes on you become strangely attached to every character including Max’s obscure pet goldfish, one eyed cat and homeless man that lives at the foot of his building. I found the expression captured with each character was hilarious and couldn’t help but laugh at the simple, heart warming comdey. Glad I stumbled across this truly remarkable film. JOM
